Beginning Skaters

Triple Toe Skatewear will educate the beginning skaters and families in the proper care of new skates by teaching correct lacing of the skates and what is needed to maintain the boots and blades.

Start your first skating experience by caring for your skates. Always wear hard guards when walking. After you put the skates on, put the guards on the blades and take them off when you reach the ice rink door. When you get off the ice, put them back on. Remember, hard guards are only for walking. Sit down at the bench, remove the guards and wipe the blades with an absorbent towel or chamois. Immediately cover the blades with soft terrycloth soakers to keep moisture off the blades. Leave the soakers on the blades until the next time you are skating. Keeping the blades covered with the soakers will eliminate extra sharpenings due to rust build up and will prevent your blades from cutting into your boots and other items in you skate bag. Carry your skates in a bag that allows the skates to get plenty of air, nobody wants stinky skates.

We suggest that while you are taking group lessons in skate school to have your blades sharpened prior to the beginning of each session to insure that all nicks are removed. We will always assess the blades before they are sharpened to see if sharpening is necessary. The recommended time between sharpenings is 18 hours on the ice.
